Photoessay #203 - Flood reconstruction

The floods last weekend damaged the culvert at the end of my street which spans Lyons Creek, a salmon spawning creek (theoretically) that runs into Lake Washington about a mile away. Last Sunday near record rainfall flooded out many basements (including my next door neighbor). After the storm, it looked like part of the roadway over the little bridge over the creek had disappeared by the side of the road.

The authorities must have deemed it unsafe because almost immediately the construction guys came and fixed or rebuilt the culvert. Lots of big equipment and action. I noticed that at least one set of parents had brought their young children to watch for awhile. Lots of digging and scooping and dumping and twirling of big construction rigs. One assume that they knew what they were doing!

The farther away shot gives an idea of the appearance of my neighborhood. Picture taken about 3pm in December. It's green and gray and often dark. Lots of trees. I moved here because I wanted a place that was green all the time. No more arid landscapes, I wanted green. So I have it. Damp and dark goes along with that.

Floods....I just wish we could get rain here in Georgia.

It's very green around here, without all the rain. I must say though, there's no place more beautiful than WA when the weather is good.
