Photoessay #71 - Endings

All of our lives are filled with beginnings and endings. We live and die. Once door closes, another opens. It happens for ourselves and for our children. We hope and we grieve. Look forward and backward.

College athletics brims full of comings and goings. In the NCAA, the players have four years of eligibility. When you've finished that amount of time, you're done as far as competition.

I can't presume to know what this athlete is thinking. But this is just prior to her last appearance at Husky Softball Stadium as a player. The idea of playing at Husky Stadium is a lofty goal for an athlete, a huge achievement. If you play there, that means you are a member of a Pac 10 team, the strongest conference in the nation. She pauses during the warmups and looks lost in her own thoughts, dropping to one knee by herself and stares across the field. Maybe she is trying to take it all in, the whole experience of playing at Husky Stadium, appearing before her hometown crowd for the last time. Or not, I'm speculating.

As a young strong talented person, she has a long promising life ahead of her (knock on wood!). Many good things still to come...I hope she stays in the game where she has such talent and passion.
