Photoessay #20 - Deceased squirrel sets the tone

The funeral home that where my father's memorial was held did a fine job, they were ready, the room was big enough, appropriate facilities, helpful staff.

But it did remind me strongly as a remnant from some Southern Gothic movie. The turreted old house, the canopy to the entrance, the old fashioned doorbell, the heavy wooden furnishings with doors ajar to reveal open caskets. Two men of indeterminate age who helped with the service looked straight out of a dracula movie with slicked back gray hair and pasty complexions. The big organ with its creepy chords, the heavy black draperies barely letting in the early spring sunshine.

Yippee, the place was great! But the crowning touch was the dessicated dead squirrel hanging from the tree out front. Swinging in the breeze. Right in front of the funeral home sign. What a great finishing touch! Set the tone perfectly for this old-fashioned funeral home. My (now) 25 year old son needs to record this perfect detail on his cell phone camera. Just to have a memento of how the whole thing felt.

I was not that observant of the building or the surroundings. It looked so much like Savannah GA that I made no note of it. Missed the dead animal completely! Maybe because we came in so late and we just wanted to make it there on time!

The dead squirrel was the best part. Dennis tried to emphasize the squirrel in the picture but it's a little much. Before, he was too gray, blended in, now he looks like he's from outer space
